PPI Information (Proton Pump Inhibitors)
PPI is taken orally. These medicines are available in the form of capsules and tablets. You have to take PPI medicines 30 minutes before your first meal of the day. Many PPI brands are available in the market that you can get without a prescription. But still, you need to seek advice from your doctors so that you can avoid any health issues. Doctors can adjust the dose of PPI according to the patient’s condition like if you have peptic ulcers, your doctor will prescribe you PPIs with 2 or 3 with some other medicines for two weeks to cure it.
When do you need to call the doctor?
There are always some conditions when you must call the doctor or else you will have to face the consequences. We are listing down some of those conditions when contacting a doctor becomes a must.
- If you are seeing any side effects of using PPIs
- When you have some other unusual effects or symptoms on your body.
- When you have tried improving, but your symptoms are not improving.
What are some possible risks and side effects of using Nexium, Prevacid, or Prilosec?
Over the counter medicines are not always safe to use for the long term; that’s why it is always recommended to use over the counter medicines with your doctor’s recommendation. We are here to list out some of the most significant risks that Nexium, Prevacid, or Prilosec can cause and that you must avoid. So, without any further ado, let’s have a look!
Kidney failure:
Many studies have revealed the link between long-term use of PPIs, especially Nexium with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and acute kidney injury. It is as painful as it sounds, and most importantly, the damage caused to kidneys with these conditions is permanent. Once you are diagnosed with Chronic kidney disease or Acute Kidney Injury, there is no coming back even if you discontinue using PPIs. some warning signs of CKD and AKI are
- Weight loss and losing appetite
- Swelling on ankles, feet and hands
- Difficulty in breathing
- Blood in pee
- Increased need to urinate
- Insomnia
- Itching
- Tiredness
When you or anyone around you happens to see any of these symptoms, rush to the doctor because even a single minute can bring you closer to irreversible damage. Also, don’t forget to discontinue using PPIs if you are using them, no matter how much you need. DOn’t start using it again without your doctor’s prescription.
Stroke risk:
ischemic stroke is a significant side effect of using PPIs like Nexium, Prevacid, or Prilosec. Ischemic stroke is one of the most common strokes caused by blood clotting. It causes blockage in blood vessels in the brain. It blocks the flow of blood in the brain and causes strokes. When the blood flow in the brain is not normal, brain cells begin to die within minutes, and it can severely damage the brain cells and lead to ischemic stroke. Some of the significant symptoms of ischemic stroke include the following:
- Sudden numbness of face or weakness
- Confusion or finding troubles in speaking
- When you get trouble seeing from one eye or both
- If you feel trouble walking or feel dizziness
- When you feel a severe headache.
Whenever you get some of these symptoms, know that the time has arrived when you need medical assistance as soon as possible. Delay of even a single minute can cause irreversible damage.
