Essure is a birth control device that is permanently implanted in the female body to avoid Essure was designed as an alternative to tubal ligation. In 2018, Bayer, who was the manufacturer, stopped selling Essure as birth control and also ordered to return the devices back to Bayer, which were not used. By the end of 2019, all the unused Essure birth control devices were returned to Bayer. Bayer claimed that they were getting back their devices  was because of the financial crisis and stopped making these devices, in an effort to the health risks that using this birth control brought with it.

How Essure Birth control devices work.

Essure acts as a blockage between the eggs and sperms. It stops the sperm from reaching the egg, and hence pregnancy is prevented.

There was a huge number of females who opted for Essure birth control devices instead of any other method because of the reason that this device does not require surgery. Unlike a tube ligation, the doctors don’t need to cut into the body to insert the device or burn the fallopian tubes. Doctors don’t even need anesthesia for this treatment. All they do is insert a flexible metal coil in the fallopian tube.

When the device is inserted into the body, the scar tissues produce in the fallopian tube, which keeps the sperm from reaching the eggs and prevents pregnancy. But, you have to wait for three months for the scar tissues to build and prevent pregnancy. Even after three months, you must get an Essure confirmation test before having intercourse to avoid pregnancy. A transvaginal ultrasound or vaginal X-ray is the method of checking if fallopian tubes are blocked. The women have to use other birth control methods until the confirmation test’s positive results.

What are some significant health issues caused by the Essure birth control device?

The significant cause of the FDA banning Essure birth control were the symptoms and side effects that infuriated the clients who opted for Essure devices. There is a list of risks that were recorded at that time. Although Essure devices are available in the market and some health care providers do this treatment for birth control, yet you need to be aware of all the harms it can cause. The following is the list of health risks that you must keep in mind!

  • Extreme cramping, pain, unusual vaginal bleeding
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Vomiting
  • Some women also complained about pelvic discomfort or back pain.

These are just short-term complications of having Essure device insertion. But there is still a list of long-term side effects that kept the women from getting this treatment for birth control.

Uterine perforation:

It is the most significant harm of using Essure birth control devices. Uterine perforation is a condition in which a hole or tear is made in the uterus because of surgery. It is observed that in some surgeries to insert flexible metal coils in fallopian tubes, doctors accidentally made a hole or tore the tubes. Due to which some patients lost their lives. When the uterus is perforated, the doctors know it right away, and they have to do further surgery to look further into the body to treat the perforated uterus. If you see any of the following symptoms even after having Essure birth control, know that you are suffering from Uterine Perforation, and you need to get immediate medical assistance.

  • Severe pelvic pain
  • Extreme pain in the lower abdomen
  • Bloating
  • Unplanned pregnancy
  • Vomiting
  • Chills
  • Fever
  • Nausea

When you get these symptoms, know that you are injured and need to get to the doctor as soon as possible. Delay of even a second can cause irreversible damage.

Essure migration to the abdominal or pelvic cavity:

Essure migration is one of the significant harms that Essure devices cause. Doctors observed that Essure devices inserted into the fallopian tubes were moved to the pelvic or abdominal cavity in many patients. This migration can damage many internal organs, also the uterus, and cause extreme pain in the pelvic area. The following are some symptoms that will warn you about the Essure migration inside you.

  • Extreme pelvic pain
  • Abnormal periods
  • Memory lapses
  • Dizziness
  • Fainting
  • Severe bloating
  • Sharp pain in the Essure location
  • Fatigue

When you feel any of these symptoms, know that your Essure is moved or displaced inside the body, and it should be addressed by a health expert as soon as possible. If it is left unchecked, it can cause severe damage.
